Environmental Permitting Specialist

The Environmental Permitting Specialist will be responsible for overseeing our client’s environmental study protocols and review plan for each project. They will also be responsible for managing relationships with environmental consultants and representing the company with state and federal agencies.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage scope and timing of environmental and wildlife studies for existing wind and solar projects in the company portfolio
  • Oversee Environmental consultant contracts and review studies performed by those consultants to ensure alignment with established company risk metrics
  • Where internal policies regarding environmental and wildlife risk are not established, help create those standards.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with state agencies and present findings at meetings where the projects are discussed
  • Research and Identify updates and changes to national environmental laws and communicate permitting impact to development team on an as-needed basis
  • Represent the company on national environmental collaborative bodies to include AWWI

Key Tasks and Deliverables

  • Assess levels of risk and appropriate mitigation for company projects
  • Present findings and negotiating project requirements with state and federal agencies
  • Select and manage the 3rd party environmental consultants used by the company
  • Communicate to the development team changes in how major environmental laws impact renewable project studies and siting

Success Criteria/KPIs

  • Obtain necessary permitting approvals or agency concurrence while minimizing compliance expense and operational curtailment
  • Minimize cost of environmental studies by avoiding unnecessary studies or identifying most cost-effective consultant to be used
  • Limit post-construction liability from state and federal agencies by ensuring project studies and mitigation measures are comprehensive, may requiring obtaining State and Federal take permits

Decision Responsibility in Committees, Decisions Boards & Business Area Meetings

  • Responsible for selecting roster of environmental consultants used and approving individual project studies
  • Responsible for determining where take permits will be necessary
  • Responsible for agreeing to other mitigation measures with state and federal agencies

Internal Key Interfaces

  • Development – supporting scoping of project studies
  • Finance – providing inputs for project financial model
  • PR and Comms – supporting federal and regional industry groups on environmental perspective
  • M&A – Review of permitting aspects of potential acquisitions

Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience

  • 5+ years’ experience in environmental permitting as a project manager or similar
  • A bachelors degree in wildlife or related field
  • Ability to travel to agency meetings and conferences (20%)
  • Optional
  • Experience working in international and cross-cultural teams
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to influence
  • Prior experience with environmental consulting or environmental agency
