Our client works closely with public, cooperative and investor-owned utilities & community choice aggregators to advance the expansion and coordination of distributed energy resources (DERs) across residential, commercial, industrial, and public sector properties. The company’s goal is to promote the widespread use of DERs to strengthen grid reliability, lower energy expenses, and contribute to a more sustainable future.

Role Overview

Our client is looking for a visionary and results-driven Head of Business Development to drive growth into new markets, forge high-impact partnerships, and uncover innovative opportunities for expansion. This role will play a key part in shaping and implementing a scalable strategy that enhances our client’s position within the energy sector. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in business development, strategic partnerships, and market expansion, with deep expertise in the utility industry and Distributed Energy Resources (DERs).

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Design and execute a growth strategy to expand DER adoption in both emerging and established markets
  • Pinpoint key geographic areas, customer demographics, and applications for DER implementation across residential, commercial, industrial, and public sectors
  • Establish and nurture relationships with utilities, grid operators, municipalities, and major energy consumers to facilitate DER projects
  • Oversee negotiations and structure agreements for development collaborations, pilot initiatives, and large-scale DER deployments
  • Create market entry strategies with partners to drive project acceleration and adoption
  • Explore and develop innovative business models, funding approaches, and distribution channels to speed up DER integration
  • Collaborate with internal teams to transform market demands into practical DER solutions, ensuring seamless execution
  • Spearhead efforts to scale deployment strategies, including aggregation frameworks, virtual power plants, and grid service initiatives
  • Work closely with product, engineering, and operations teams to align market and customer needs with the company’s solutions
  • Act as an industry expert, representing the company at key conferences, industry panels, and strategic discussions
  • Recruit, mentor, and lead a high-performing business development team to support the company’s growth.

Qualifications

  • Over a decade of experience in business growth, project execution, or strategic roles within the energy industry, specializing in distributed energy resources (DERs)
  • Demonstrated success in spearheading distributed energy initiatives
  • Ability to form key partnerships and drive project implementation
  • Extensive knowledge of DER solutions, including solar, battery storage, demand response, microgrids, virtual power plants (VPPs), and EV charging infrastructure
  • Expertise in utility programs and grid modernization
  • Skilled in structuring commercial deals, power purchase agreements (PPAs), and financial models for DER projects
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills
  • Able to engage with utilities, regulators, developers, and technology stakeholders
  • Entrepreneurial approach with a history of driving business expansion and delivering results in dynamic, fast-moving environments
  • Strong analytical abilities and strategic mindset
  • Hands-on approach to project execution
  • An MBA or a higher degree in business, energy, or a related discipline is preferable
