Executive Director, Clean Energy

Role Overview

Our client is hiring an Executive Director to lead the organization through its next phase of growth and impact. The ideal candidate has experience scaling nonprofits beyond several million dollars in revenue, a strong network in the clean energy sector, and a track record in strategic leadership and fundraising. This role will oversee organizational capacity-building, funding growth, and program expansion while fostering a collaborative, mission-driven culture.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Guide the organization’s strategic direction and ensure its long-term goals are advanced through clear, mission-aligned decision-making
  • Oversee a small, growing team—including full-time staff, contractors, and active volunteers—to carry out and refine key programs
  • Act as the main point of contact with the Board, facilitating strong governance and alignment on priorities
  • Develop and implement a diversified revenue plan to increase funding from a mix of philanthropic, corporate, and earned sources
  • Build and maintain relationships with funders, partners, and other stakeholders to strengthen support and expand the organization’s influence
  • Grow earned revenue opportunities tied to the organization’s programs and services
  • Ensure programs remain high-quality and responsive to emerging needs, while staying rooted in equity, leadership development, and energy transition principles
  • Pursue opportunities to broaden the organization’s reach, test new offerings, and increase its overall impact
  • Oversee communications across channels—to engage supporters and highlight impact
  • Represent the organization publicly at industry and nonprofit events, strengthening visibility and thought leadership
  • Act as a vocal advocate for the mission and community, including program participants and alumni
  • Manage finances, including annual budgeting, financial tracking, and regulatory compliance for nonprofit operations
  • Define staffing needs, recruit and onboard team members, and foster a positive, accountable workplace culture

Qualifications

  • Extensive experience in senior nonprofit roles, including oversight of programs and organizational leadership
  • History of growing a nonprofit organization significantly in both scope and budget, with millions of dollars in revenue expansion
  • Strong background in fundraising from foundations and corporations, with experience closing major multi-year grants exceeding hundreds of thousands of dollars
  • Familiarity with the clean energy sector or a well-established network within it; genuine commitment to climate equity is highly valued
  • Background in leadership training, justice-centered initiatives, or fellowship-based models is considered a plus
  • Exceptional skills in communication, team management, and building external relationships
  • Alignment with the organization’s core principles around inclusion, equity, and long-term systems change
