Role Overview

The Director of Engineering plays a key leadership role in mentoring and guiding engineering staff. This position supports technical execution across project design, system performance, and ongoing maintenance for a growing portfolio of renewable energy assets across the country. Success in this role requires both self-direction and strong collaboration skills, along with the creativity and drive to thrive in a dynamic, fast-moving company scaling its operations nationwide.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Lead and support junior engineering team members in day-to-day activities and technical execution
  • Collaborate to align priorities across 100+ active projects spanning early-stage development through acquisition
  • Ensure timely completion and clear communication of technical documentation to internal teams and external partners
  • Oversee staffing needs including hiring, mentorship, performance management, and career development
  • Guide the refinement of deliverables, systems, tools, and workflows to maintain accuracy and efficiency
  • Provide oversight across all project phases—from origination and engineering through construction, operations, and maintenance
  • Develop and share dashboards and analytics tracking workloads, project timelines, resource allocation, and system performance
  • Maintain and enhance a centralized repository of design standards and workflows based on evolving business needs
  • Monitor quality control from project inception through construction handover, including as-built documentation
  • Stay ahead of technological trends, vetting innovations and presenting opportunities to department leadership
  • Collaborate across departments to align service offerings and ensure cohesive execution
  • Measure and analyze performance data for operational and acquired assets
  • Define and source hardware/software solutions to ensure accurate data delivery and reporting
  • Work alongside the AI team to advance predictive analytics, cloud-based tools, and machine learning applications
  • Lead strategy around vendor selection, contract negotiations, and strategic supply chain partnerships
  • Partner with procurement leadership to evaluate costs, performance benchmarks, and supplier effectiveness
  • Manage the platform and tools used for performance tracking and system oversight
  • Integrate real-world performance feedback into the design cycle to improve engineering outcomes
  • Ensure energy production quality across all systems, benchmarking by location and project attributes
  • Collaborate with asset management to streamline workflows, improve turnaround time, and boost quality assurance
  • Partner with executive leadership on risk management plans and strategic growth initiatives
  • Define and report on technical performance goals and department-level KPIs
  • Deliver monthly and quarterly updates for review with senior leadership
  • Offer feedback and insight to support executive and cross-departmental decision-making
  • Align engineering initiatives with company-wide objectives and stakeholder priorities

Qualifications

  • Deep commitment to advancing clean energy, with a strong work ethic
  • Ability to thrive in a dynamic, fast-moving startup environment
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering; advanced credentials or certifications are a plus
  • Extensive experience in progressively senior engineering roles, including team leadership
  • Background working at a top-tier company in the renewable energy sector
  • Proven track record in overseeing technical operations and driving innovation across projects
  • Experience managing multiple cross-functional teams and high-volume project portfolios concurrently
  • Skilled in coordinating schedules, setting priorities, and directing internal teams and external collaborators
  • Authority over technical compliance and construction standards
  • Deep familiarity with permitting processes, contractor negotiation, issue resolution, and risk oversight
  • Demonstrated success in creating and scaling operational processes during periods of organizational change
  • Experience rolling out and managing technical or quality management systems
  • Comfortable collaborating and presenting at the executive level, both within the company and with external partners
