Director of Development

Our client is a U.S.-based renewable energy investment firm focused on solar and storage. With a large-scale portfolio spanning operational and early-stage assets, they partner with developers to modernize infrastructure and accelerate the clean energy transition.

Role Overview

The Development Director will act as both a team leader and hands on contributor, managing development staff while advancing key solar and energy storage projects within our client’s portfolio. This individual will be expected to operate independently and drive complex initiatives with minimal oversight. The role requires prior experience in renewable energy project development, ideally across solar and/or storage. This position will collaborate closely with internal teams including acquisitions, investments, capital markets, business development, and asset management. The Director will play a key role in expanding the pipeline and supporting the delivery of new renewable energy capacity.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversee end-to-end advancement of solar and energy storage assets, from early stage origination through notice to proceed
  • Supervise and mentor development team members while ensuring projects stay on schedule and within financial targets
  • Act as the primary point of contact for partners, handling ongoing coordination and relationship management
  • Align and direct both internal teams and external stakeholders involved in project execution
  • Lead early stage evaluations of new opportunities across functions such as legal, grid connection, finance, engineering, environmental, permitting, commercial, policy, and revenue strategy
  • Partner cross-functionally to refine development workflows, optimize execution, and strengthen external partnerships
  • Track and control project timelines and costs to support efficient delivery of solar and storage assets
  • Role includes periodic travel, approximately ten percent of the time

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, construction management, or a related discipline; advanced degrees or certifications such as an MBA or PMP are advantageous
  • Extensive background – over ten years years – in renewable energy project development, with demonstrated success advancing projects from early-stage control through notice to proceed
  • Hands on experience with solar, energy storage, and similar clean energy technologies; utility-scale storage exposure is beneficial
  • Strong leadership capabilities with experience overseeing teams and driving project execution
  • Proficiency with core business software including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint; financial modeling expertise is a plus
  • Highly developed critical thinking, planning, and problem-resolution abilities
  • Self-starter mentality with the ability to independently drive initiatives from initial concept through completion
  • Solid understanding of renewable energy development workflows and commercial structures
  • Clear and effective communicator across all levels, including executives, colleagues, partners, and external stakeholders
  • Strong relationship management skills with the ability to balance competing priorities in a dynamic, fast-moving environment
  • Legally authorized to work in the U.S. without employer sponsorship
  • Ability to work two days in the office in New York City on a hybrid work schedule
