General Manager, Solar Development

Our client is seeking a General Manager (GM) for their Solar Development business. This individual will be responsible for rapidly scaling their existing business into new geographies and asset classes (utility, storage, etc.), determining the objectives and processes necessary to execute on that strategy, and securing and managing resources and capital to responsibly advance a portfolio of development assets. The GM will oversee the development team, be responsible for managing key external financial partners and report directly to the company’s Chief Executive Officer.

Job Requirements

  • The GM will be responsible for establishing and implementing a business unit strategy to rapidly scale the business. Strategy responsibilities will include:
    • Establishing a target portfolio composition of community solar and other asset classes that fits the business’ risk tolerance, financial constraints, and goals;
    • Building strategic partnerships with industry partners, service providers, capital partners, and key consultants;
    • Providing leadership and decision making for key opportunities and events, contract negotiations, and soliciting executive team feedback and support; and
    • Responsible for the creation of internal and external plans, proformas, and presentations.
  • The GM will be responsible for the overall financial growth of the development unit including but not limited to
    • Securing and managing development financing;
    • Managing capital allocation in a manner which balances project returns, MWs delivered, and risk; and
    • Overseeing, in collaboration with Finance & Accounting, the business unit P&L, budgeting, goal setting, and reporting.
  • The GM will be responsible for the overall business unit execution including but not limited to:
    • Establish processes and deliverables to deliver profitable solar projects that meet key financial, social, and programmatic goals;
    • Maintain project models that clearly demonstrate economics, risk, and sensitivities to aid decision making;
    • Responsible for the output of the development team, assuring detailed diligence during acquisitions and continuous development of projects; and
    • Collaborate with their key internal disciplines and departments to aid initiatives including policy, legal, finance, marketing, construction, and accounting.
  • The GM will provide internal and external leadership for the business unit including:
    • Managing people resourcing, team organization, reporting structure, and role definition;
    • Leading communication and reporting and
    • Enabling team building and professional development for all department team members.

  • Strong communication skills and ability to summarize complex issues and convey information such that it invites and enables efficient decision making
  • Comfort working in a high growth environment and can effectively collaborate with multiple disciplines
  • Proficient with the financial tools required to develop models, business forecasts, and long-term planning
