Role Overview

The EVP, Energy Markets and Portfolio Management, holds full accountability for the organization’s power market exposure, direct energy acquisition costs, and overall margin protection.

Key areas of oversight include:

  • Designing and executing wholesale electricity sourcing strategies
  • Developing demand projections and structuring seasonal hedging programs
  • Managing portfolio positions supporting fixed-price retail offerings
  • Coordinating integration of company-owned solar assets, virtual power purchase agreements, and emerging storage technologies
  • Delivering precise projections for revenue, contribution margin, and risk-weighted financial outcomes

The position safeguards pricing discipline, minimizes market exposure, and enables scalable, profitable growth while navigating dynamic and often unpredictable energy markets.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute company-wide sourcing plans for electricity, capacity, grid services, and environmental credits
  • Manage counterparty relationships and negotiate structured supply agreements
  • Adjust hedge positions by season, contract type, and customer segment across residential and commercial portfolios
  • Provide weekly and forward-looking pricing inputs to commercial teams
  • Reduce structural risk premiums through stronger forecasting and disciplined hedge execution
  • Partner with Retail leadership to align residential and commercial pricing with wholesale market activity to balance margin and exposure
  • Operate within established corporate energy risk management policies
  • Maintain compliance with exposure limits, hedge coverage targets, and escalation procedures
  • Monitor and manage basis exposure, load shape risk, congestion impacts, and regulatory changes
  • Coordinate with Risk and Finance to ensure accounting treatment of hedges reflects underlying economic intent
  • Maintain accurate demand forecasts by market, product type, and customer class
  • Take ownership of projected energy acquisition costs and explain variances; collaborate with Pricing to forecast and analyze gross margin performance
  • Align hedge layering strategy with expected load curves and renewable generation output
  • Incorporate owned solar assets into the broader retail risk structure
  • Oversee virtual power purchase agreements and third-party offtake arrangements
  • Evaluate battery storage, demand flexibility, and other physical or financial tools to improve portfolio performance
  • Lead, mentor, and scale a high-performing wholesale and portfolio management team
  • Collaborate closely with Risk, Sales, Finance, Operations, Regulatory, and Development teams
  • Translate complex market developments into clear strategic guidance for executive leadership and the board
  • Oversee the market pricing function, including full product lifecycle design
  • Confirm margin objectives and track realized performance of retail offerings
  • Work alongside Sales leadership to balance risk management with volume and growth objectives

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of professional experience spanning wholesale electricity markets, asset and position oversight, enterprise energy risk strategy, and coordination of retail demand with generation assets
  • Hands-on responsibility for managing fixed-rate retail power portfolios
  • Demonstrated success in hedging residential and commercial & industrial demand, incorporating renewable supply into risk structures, and stabilizing gross margin performance
  • Extensive understanding of organized power markets (ISO/RTO environments), complex energy contract structures, and renewable energy credit trading
  • Strong team leadership capabilities with the ability to influence across departments
  • Background in building and scaling operational processes, systems infrastructure, and governance frameworks
  • MBA or other advanced graduate degree preferred
